What keeps blocking the drains here?

Most repeat blockages here come from the ground the houses sit on, not from anything anyone did wrong. The usual causes:

Tree roots at the joints

The earthenware lines laid as the lakeside streets filled in carry open joints, and roots find them year after year under old gardens.

Fat and food waste

Kitchen lines on long-occupied blocks slowly narrow with grease until one more load of dishes finishes them off.

Graded runs collecting debris

Blocks that climb the rise away from the lake push water, silt and debris down long falls, and a dip in the line collects it all.

Stormwater overload

A Hunter downpour can overwhelm a line that ran perfectly in dry weather, especially low down on the slope.

A drain that blocks twice in a season is telling you something. The second blockage is usually the sign to stop clearing and start diagnosing.

What can you check before you call?

A few checks narrow the problem down before anyone sets out:

  • Run water in the sink, the shower and the laundry in turn. If only one fixture is slow, the blockage is close to that fixture.
  • Watch the toilet when the laundry empties. If it rises or gurgles, the blockage is further down the shared line.
  • Check the overflow relief gully outside. Anything coming up out of it means the sewer line needs attention, not just the fixtures.

From ringing to a camera-checked line

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Cleared, then filmed

The jetter or electric eel clears the line, then the camera goes through to confirm it is clean and show what caused the blockage.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

The filmed check is the part that matters. It shows either a sound pipe or a root-split joint lining up the next blockage, and you keep the footage.

Warners Bay Drain Services

Drain work splits into six jobs, and the right one depends on what the line is doing:

Plumber running a drain camera at an outdoor pit

CCTV drain inspections

** the camera goes down first when the cause is unclear or the blockage keeps coming back.

Plumber working a drain-clearing machine

Drain jetting

** high-pressure water that scours grease, silt and roots off the pipe wall without chemicals.

Plumber laying new pipe in an open trench

Blocked sewer

** waste rising through toilets and yard gullies, cleared and diagnosed.

Plumber installing a strip drain beside a sliding door

Stormwater drains

** downpipes and yard pits that back up in heavy rain, on the streets low on the slope.

Pipe relining equipment set up in a shower recess

Pipe relining

** a cracked line gets a new lining inside the old pipe instead of a full dig-up.

Tree roots exposed around a pipe in a trench

Tree root removal

** roots cleared from the pipe and the cracked joint they came through located, for gardens that have grown into the drains.

If the fault is urgent and water is coming up into the house, the emergency plumber page is the faster route in.

What changes the cost of clearing a drain?

Drain prices turn mostly on what the camera shows:

  • What the footage finds Since a clear-and-check is a smaller job than relining or excavation.
  • Pipe material Because an earthenware line with cracked joints is a different job from PVC.
  • Access to the line Including under-floor work on sloping blocks against the wall of the hill.
  • The hour of the call Since after-hours work carries its own rate, given to you on the phone.

Drain trouble on the sloping streets

The older the garden, the harder the drain works

Brick-veneer homes from the 1960s to 1980s fill the established streets back from Lake Macquarie, and their clay-jointed lines have sat for decades beneath gardens that kept growing.

The slope adds its own load

Blocks graded down the rise push stormwater, silt and debris through long runs, and low foreshore streets such as The Esplanade take the combined flow in a storm. A dip or a root ball partway down collects it, and the first sign is usually water that will not shift after rain.

The newer stock is not immune

Renovations bring PVC and better falls, but they also bring more paved surface pushing rain into the same yard drains. Whatever era your place belongs to, the camera tells us which story is yours.

When We're Not the Right Call

Some blockages sit outside your boundary

A choke in the sewer main itself is for the water authority to clear, and the footage shows you where your pipe ends and theirs begins.

Some drainage problems belong to a different process

A collapsed stormwater pit on shared strata property runs through the owners corporation, which is where strata and agent jobs come in.

Drain questions, answered plainly

How do I know if the blockage is tree roots?

Watch for a drain that blocks again soon after clearing, a gurgle from the floor waste, or the toilet level rising while the laundry tub drains. Roots work into the open joints of old earthenware lines under established gardens. Camera footage shows the roots and any cracks, and whether clearing will hold or the line needs relining.

Do you clear blocked sewers as well as stormwater?

Yes, both. Sewer trouble means sewage backing up at a toilet, shower drain or yard gully, while stormwater trouble shows as water pooling around the pit in a downpour. They are separate pipe systems with separate fixes, and the camera check after clearing confirms which one failed and why.

Will clearing the drain stop it blocking again?

Clearing gets the water moving straight away, but the answer depends on the cause. Grease and soft blockages usually stay gone, while roots in a cracked clay joint will return until the pipe is repaired or relined. After each clear the camera goes through, so you see what is left in the ground and what it means for next time.

Do you unblock drains on the older blocks back from the water?

Yes. Those blocks carry much of the 1960s to 1980s housing, and plenty of it still drains through earthenware pipe beneath mature planting. Jetter, eel and camera all come on the truck, so the clear and the diagnosis happen on the same visit.
