Which faults can't wait until morning?

Anything that is actively damaging the house or putting people at risk counts as an emergency, and those are the calls we answer at any hour:

  • A burst pipe or split hose with water you cannot shut off
  • A sewer pushing waste back into the house, not just a slow drain
  • The smell of gas anywhere inside or near the home
  • A hot water tank dumping water onto the floor
  • Stormwater surging toward the door on the low side of the suburb

A tap that drips, a drain that is merely slow, or a renewal you have been putting off can all hold for a booked visit. If you ring at 2am about something that is not urgent, we book a daytime visit rather than charge you night rates.

While the water is still coming out

A burst pipe does damage by the minute, so the moves you make before help arrives matter more than anything else you do that night:

  1. 1

Find the water meter, usually at the front boundary, and shut the main tap off completely.

  2. 2

Cut power at the switchboard if water is anywhere near wiring, powerpoints or appliances.

  3. 3

If the burst is on a hot water line, close the isolating valve at the tank as well.

  4. 4

Move rugs, boxes and anything electrical out of the water's path, then lift what you can.

Once we arrive, the sequence is fixed. We isolate the feed, cut out the split section, and either cap the run for the night or fit the replacement copper then and there, depending on what the job needs.

What the after-hours calls here are made of

Tired copper, older hoses

The 1960s to 1980s brick homes across this suburb still carry copper and galvanised pipe that has sat in the walls for decades, and in stock of that age they let go without much warning. Kitchens and bathrooms in those houses have seen long use, and their ageing flexible hoses fail the same way.

Storms on the low side

Rainfall records average 1,094 millimetres a year here. The streets along The Esplanade sit below the rest of the suburb, so when a storm lands at night, surcharge and overflow work becomes the urgent list.

Both patterns mean an after-hours call in this suburb usually has a findable cause, and we look for it rather than just mopping the symptom.

What drives the price of an out-of-hours job?

"Not only all of that but the job came in right on quote." Steve

That matters most at midnight, when the last thing anyone needs is a surprise figure on the invoice. What shifts the number from one emergency to the next:

  • The hour After-hours attendance carries different rates than a daytime booking, and we say which applies before we set out.
  • What actually failed A split flexi hose and a burst copper run under a floor are different jobs with different parts.
  • Where the pipe sits Work under houses on sloping blocks takes longer than work in open air against a wall.
  • The parts needed What is on the truck versus what has to be sourced changes the timeline as well as the figure.

Steve saw the same discipline on his job:

How the after-hours call runs

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The damage gets stopped

The water is isolated, the failed section cut out or capped, or the overflowing line cleared, so the house stops taking on water.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Jobs that belong with someone else

When we're not the right call: a burst water main in the street or a choked sewer main is the water authority's job, so you report it to their faults line instead of paying a private plumber.

Wiring, powerpoints or appliances that got wet need an electrician before the power goes back on, even if a pipe caused it. The plumbing side stays with Warners Bay Plumbing Co.

Late-night questions, answered plainly

Do you come out to the units along The Esplanade at night?

Yes. A night call to a foreshore apartment runs like any other, except we work within the body corporate's access and noise limits where we can. If water is running into a neighbouring unit, stopping that comes first, starting with the unit's own isolation valve.

Is a burst flexible hose under the sink an emergency?

It is if you cannot close the isolating tap feeding it. The older hoses fitted in long-occupied kitchens tend to let go without any warning, and a full-pressure line can empty a lot of water onto a floor in minutes. Turn that tap off, ring us, and keep a bucket under it if it still drips.

What should I do if the hot water tank is leaking badly?

Close the cold water valve above the tank, switch an electric unit off at its circuit breaker, and open a hot tap to ease pressure in the cylinder. That usually slows the leak to a trickle. Then ring, and a temporary hot water tank can be arranged while the new system is sorted.

Do you handle sewer overflowing in a storm?

Yes. When a Hunter downpour overloads the drainage on the low streets, sewers and stormwater lines can surcharge back into yards and homes, and that is urgent work. We clear the line, and once the storm has passed the camera can find where stormwater is getting into the sewer.
