Repair or Replace: How Do You Tell?

A hot water system usually tells you which side of that line it sits on. Repairs make sense when the tank is sound and the fault sits in a part we can swap:

  • An element or thermostat that has failed on an electric unit
  • A pilot or igniter fault on a gas system
  • A valve that drips or releases constantly
  • A fitting or pipe leaking around an otherwise healthy tank

A new system makes more sense once the cylinder has corroded through, the tank seam is leaking, or the repair would cost close to what it buys you in extra years. You hear which side your tank falls on before any quote.

Repairs

No hot water, lukewarm water, or a unit that trips the switchboard: we test the parts, fix what is fixable, and tell you plainly when a repair is throwing good money at a dying tank.

Replacement and new systems

The old tank has leaked or simply worn out, and the changeover to a new unit is agreed in writing, with a loan tank available so the house stays in hot water.

Gas hot water

Storage and continuous-flow gas units fitted and serviced by licensed gas fitters, who also check the older pipework a renovation tends to expose. See the gas fitting page.

Heat pump and solar

Heat pumps and solar hot water systems suit this climate well, and the heat pump page covers how they run and what the swap involves.

Electric storage and continuous-flow units

Electric storage remains common in the older housing here, and most faults come down to the element, the thermostat or the valves. Continuous-flow electric units suit smaller homes and apartments because they heat on demand and hold no stored water.

We repair both types and replace them when the cylinder is done. The price covers the unit, the parts and the labour, all named before we start.

Where gas fits

Gas units heat quickly and cost less to run than straight electric storage in the right house. The catch here is age: many brick-veneer homes still have gas pipework from the 1960s to 1980s.

Checking the old pipework

On a gas hot water job we test that pipework too and replace tired sections to current standard instead of patching them. Any smell of gas is a separate job, covered on the gas leak detection page.

Heat pumps and solar on Hunter roofs

How a heat pump earns its keep. It moves heat from the outside air into the water rather than generating it with an element, which keeps running costs down through the mild winters here. Solar hot water has been popular on these roofs for years too.

Area-level figures record 1,690 heat pump and 1,604 solar hot water installs in this pocket, so neither system is an experiment on a Hunter roof. If a heat pump is on your shortlist, the heat pump hot water page steps through the decision.

What drives a hot water price?

Nothing gets added once the work is underway.

A hot water price starts from the system you choose:

  • The system and its capacity, from a small electric unit to a gas or heat pump changeover
  • Access to the tank, including tight under-house or cupboard positions on sloping blocks
  • Parts, depending on whether the job is a valve swap or a full cylinder
  • After-hours call-outs, priced separately and stated before we set out

When the old tank lets go around here

Long-term owners, original systems

Census figures put 44.7 percent of households here owning their homes outright, and much of the housing dates from the 1960s to 1980s growth. The people who have held their place longest are often the ones still running a tank that was old when they moved in.

Renovations expose the old gas lines

Many established brick homes back from the water still carry their first natural gas fittings, and a kitchen or bathroom renovation is when those get replaced along with the hot water connection.

Apartments complicate the swap

The newer apartments along The Esplanade are strata-titled, so replacing a tank there means booking access through the body corporate and working to its hours. The strata plumbing process covers that side.

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4093 0558 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The fix or the changeover

The tank is isolated and drained, the faulty part swapped or the old unit replaced, and the hot water is tested at the taps before we pack up.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Honest limits on this work

When we're not the right call: an electric unit that has lost power through its wiring or circuit breaker needs an electrician, and a supply fault at the gas meter goes to the gas network. From the isolating valve through to the taps, the work is ours, and the rest of what we do starts at Warners Bay Plumbing Co.

Hot water questions we field here

Why does the hot water cut out and then come back?

On-and-off hot water usually means a failing element or thermostat, not a dead cylinder. Plenty of houses here date from the mid-century growth years and some still have the tank that came with them, well past its prime. We test the parts first and only recommend replacement when the tank itself is finished.

Do you replace hot water systems in the foreshore units?

Yes. A tank swap in a strata-titled building runs through body corporate access arrangements, and we work around those rules on timing and noise. You sign off on the figure first, and a loan tank keeps the showers hot if the new system is on order.

Is a heat pump hot water system suited to this climate?

It is. Winters here are mild, with records averaging 0.3 frost days a year, so a heat pump keeps working efficiently in every season. The heat pump page covers running costs and the changeover itself.

What can I do while I wait for a replacement system?

Switch an electric unit off at its circuit breaker, or set a gas unit to off at its control, then close the cold water valve feeding the tank. A temporary hot water tank covers the gap until the replacement arrives, and the changeover is priced before we start.
